Bibles Before the Year 1000

Recently our pastoral team had an opportunity to take a field trip to the Sackler Gallery in DC to see an exhibition called In the Beginning: Bibles Before The Year 1000. They are now displaying some of the oldest copied manuscripts of the Bible in existence. Some of them are dated from earlier than 200 CE. Scholors have argued that some of these manuscripts might have been copied by people who knew the apostles! It was quite an experience to see these pages of the Bible from hundreds of years ago and think that people back then were reading the same words that we have in our Bibles today. I was amazed to see how God has preserved His Word over the centuries and also grateful to Him for His kindness in doing that so sinners like us can come to know Him.

Jeff Purswell, Dean of the Pastors College, said, "This is NOT simply another exhibit—it’s the real deal, and no doubt the only time you’d ever have the opportunity to see a collection like this…so I definitely encourage everyone to go." This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So go and see this amazing exhibit! It ends on January 7, 2007.

I went to this a month ago and I must say it was amazing. Despite the fact that the exhibit sort of portrays the Bible as a piece of literature rather than a holy book, it’s still awesome to see these in real life.
