The Bondage of “Guidance” by Mark Dever

As singles, you will (and I’m certain you have already) face many major life-decisions. What am I going to study in college? What kind of job should I get after college? Should I go to graduate school? Who am I going to marry?

How do you make those decisions? What criteria do you use? This brief blog post  by Mark Dever will give you some provoking thoughts regarding seeking God’s will. Here’s an excerpt:

"The desire for such a subjective sense of leading, however, is too often, in contemporary evangelical piety, binding our brothers and sisters in Christ, paralyzing them from enjoying the good choices that God may provide, and causing them to wait wrongly before acting."

NA 08 Hotel Registration Deadline 2/25

The deadline to register for hotel rooms at New Attitude through the church is this coming Monday, 2/25. If you want to stay near other people from our church, you must register by 2/25. You can register by going to our church website (www.sovgracefairfax.org/event-registration). If you have any questions or trouble registering, please call Christine Hawes at the church office. Don’t wait until the last minute!

Thank You

THANK YOU for making last night’s event a success! So many of you served and welcomed our guests wonderfully. I heard there were something like 30 guests last night, and they all seemed to be having a great time. I loved the chocolate fountain!! I think we should have it every time we have Crossroads…

For us to do it better next time (if we decide to do something like this again), we need your feedback and input, what you thought went well, what you thought could have done better, etc. etc. Could you email me your thoughts if you have any? Here are some evaluation questions to get you started:

  • How did we do in welcoming our guests? Were they warmly greeted? Did we do a good job making them feel comfortable and welcomed?
  • Were my comments in the beginning too long? Too short? Did they express care? How did the non-believers hear it?
  • What would you do differently?

Next Sunday School Class

One of our pastors Steve Whitacre will be teaching a Sunday School Class titled "The Giver and the Gifts: What the Holy Spirit Does in the Christian and the Church" over four Sundays starting on Sunday, 2/17. Maybe you’ve had questions like:

  • What does the Holy Spirit do?
  • What are the spiritual gifts?
  • What are my spiritual gifts?
  • How can I grow in the spiritual gifts?

These are some of the questions Steve will be addressing in this class. If you’ve wondered about these questions, or if you simply have not thought much about the Holy Spirit and His work, I’d encourage you to consider taking this class. The topic he’ll be covering include:

  1. The Broad Work of the Holy Spirit
  2. The Spiritual Gifts
  3. Prophecy & Tongues
  4. Gifts of Healing & Ministry to the Sick

If you are interested in taking this class, here’s what you need to know:

  • You can sign up for this class at the Welcome Center this Sunday. (It’s FREE!)
  • The class time is 8:45am-9:45am in Room 204
  • Read Acts 1-2 before the class.

Crossroads on 2/14

We will have an evening of fun next Thursday, 2/14 in place of our regular Crossroads meeting for you (singles at Sovereign Grace Church) and your classmates, co-workers, and friends.

This gathering is primarily designed for you to bring your friends to hang out with us and enjoy great food and games, etc. I’ll be giving a short talk explaining why we are doing this. We will have plenty of good food, games, prizes, etc. So I want to encourage you to tell your friends about it and bring them to our gathering next Thursday!

CJ Mahaney Now Has a Blog

Yup, that’s right. CJ Mahaney now has a blog! Here’s what he says about it:

If I can somehow draw your attention each week to the hill called Calvary and remind you of the Savior’s substitutionary sacrifice on the cross for our sins, if I can draw your attention away from yourself and direct your affections to him, then this blog will have served your soul and made some small difference for the glory of God. I pray it does.

This is a blog worth RSSing!
