Always read with pen in hand.

May 16, 2005 8:51 am

Last week I subbed for Vince in his Old Testament Survey class. I said that you should always read with a pen in hand. Here’s why:

Why is marking a book indispensible to reading it? First, it keeps you awake–not merely conscious, but wide awake. Second, reading, if it is active, is thinking, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written. The person who says he know what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks. Third, writing your reactions down help you to remember the thoughts of the author. Reading a book should be a conversation between you and the author.

John Owen on killing sin.

May 15, 2005 9:32 pm

So I’ve been reading John Owen’s Temptation and Sin during my times meeting with God in the mornings. Right now, I’m about halfway through part 1: Mortification of Sin in Believers. I want to know more about how to kill sin in my life. Here are a couple of my favorite quotations so far:

Be killing sin or it will be killing you. p 9.

Sin is never less quiet than when it seems most quiet. p 11.

The contest is for our lives and souls. p 13.

There is no death of sin without the death of Christ. p 33.

…in the heart there is a superfluity of naughtiness. p 47.

More than one person has said that every believer should read Owen’s Temptation and Sin before they die. (Tips on how to read Owen later.) If this is intimidating to you, try James Houston’s abridged version: Sin and Temptation. And definitely read Kris Lundgaard’s adaptation, The Enemy Within.

Why would I create a blog?

Great question. I have a simple objective here: I hope to have an on-line voice with the teens of our youth ministry. I want this blog to be a forum for relevant discussion and I plan to extract and organize the best materials I can find for you guys.

This is a test of the emergency blogging system. This is only a test. Were this an actual blog, this message would be followed by emergency instructions.

Thank you.
