Don’t get me wrong. I love watching soccer, especially the World Cup, and I love playing with you guys. But as I sit here watching the US Open (as every father should on Father’s Day), I am inspired to write about why golf is the superior sport. Here’s why:

• No televised sport has so much tension and so much drama as professional golf.
• Golf is universally humbling for all who play it. Even the pros say things like: “I was humbled today.”
• The professionals play against 149 of the best guys in the sport every week. It’s not normally a team sport, so the challenge to win is unique.
• Golf requires so many different skills to play well, more than any other sport.
• And it’s such a demanding sport to play because no two shots are ever the same. Every hit has so many variables, so many things that could go wrong.
• What other sport could so many people be so bad at and yet love so much? I do!

In all fairness, there is a lot to be said for soccer. But the Open is on, and it’s heating up, so I’ll save that for another time.
