Happy birthday, Pac-Man.
June 23, 2005 6:28 amThat’s right: our little, yellow, pellet-pounding, maze-meandering, ghostie-evading friend turns 25 this month. It’s the Number 1 arcade game of all time. You haven’t really played video games until you’ve spent a few hours mastering this one. I especially love the sounds.

According the this Washington Post article, the chomp chump was born in June 1980 in Japan, and then immigrated to the US. He and Ms. Pac-Man are still happily married.
Bonus factoid: did you know that the ghosties have names? Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde. I don’t know which is which.

Gospel quotes, part 2.
June 22, 2005 6:38 amA continuation of an earlier post… some of my favorite quotes about the gospel:
I read these verses yesterday, but couldn’t help going back to them today:
“But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:5-6
“Before we can being to see the cross as something done for us, we have to see it as something done by us.” John Stott.
“Abide hard by the cross and search the mystery of his wounds.” Charles Spurgeon.
“Oh help me understand it,
help me to take it in–
What it meant to thee, the holy one,
to bear away my sin.”
Katherine A.M. Kelly.
“We never move on from the cross, only into a more profound understanding of the cross.” David Prior.

Help for parents.
June 21, 2005 11:07 pmParents, here’s one for you. The June email newsletter from the Christian Counseling & Education Foundation included the following entry. Enjoy.
Parenting Teens Wisely: Mission Impossible? Feels that way to a lot of us, doesn’t it? Without the grace and wisdom of Christ, it is flat impossible. Yet our heavenly Father is pleased to give us everything we need in his Son to parent our teenagers courageously, humbly, lovingly, wisely. The summer issue of the Journal of Biblical Counseling features a number of excellent articles (including two written by Tedd Tripp, author of Shepherding a Child’s Heart) drawing from the depth and breadth of Scripture to help you see your teens and and the parenting task with fresh eyes, perhaps new eyes. For a full listing of articles in this issue, point and click here. We think you’ll be encouraged by what you find.
Incidentally, you should know that if you have teenagers (or a spouse, or a coworker, or a friend), then you qualify as a counselor. The Journal of Biblical Counseling would be worth your time. I highly recommed it! Subscribe here.

Gospel quotes, part 1.
June 20, 2005 9:03 pmA while back I started a list of great quotes about the gospel. Here are some favorites:
“The glory of the gospel is this: the one from whom we need to be saved is the one who saved us.” R.C. Sproul.
“Divine love triumphed over divine wrath by divine self-sacrifice.” John Stott.
“We’ve given God many reasons to punish us and no reasons to love us.” Thomas Watson.
“God pardons and accepts me, a believing sinner, because Christ took my place.” Mark Mullery.
More to come…

For dads.
6:13 pmHappy Fathers Day! Hope you are enjoying your special day.
Some quotes I wasn’t able to use this morning. Thought you might enjoy:
“The most effective fathers are husbands who make it their aim to love their wives biblically.” CJ Mahaney, Sex, Romance, and the Glory of God, 30.
“The biblical model for marriage is that of loving complimentarity, where the husband and the wife are partners who value and respect each other and where the husband’s loving leadership is met with the wife’s intelligent response.” Andreas Köstenberger, God, Marriage, and Family, 75.
“We live in days when there is a mighty zeal for education in every quarter. We hear of new schools rising on all sides. We are told of new systems, and new books for the young, of every sort and description. And still for all this, the vast majority of children are manifestly not trained in the way they should go, for when they grow up to man’s estate, they do not walk with God.” J.C. Ryle, Duties of Parents, 1.
I thank God for you guys! It is a privilege to serve you!

Golf is better than soccer.
5:34 pmDon’t get me wrong. I love watching soccer, especially the World Cup, and I love playing with you guys. But as I sit here watching the US Open (as every father should on Father’s Day), I am inspired to write about why golf is the superior sport. Here’s why:
- No televised sport has so much tension and so much drama as professional golf.
- Golf is universally humbling for all who play it. Even the pros say things like: “I was humbled today.”
- The professionals play against 149 of the best guys in the sport every week. It’s not normally a team sport, so the challenge to win is unique.
- Golf requires so many different skills to play well, more than any other sport.
- And it’s such a demanding sport to play because no two shots are ever the same. Every hit has so many variables, so many things that could go wrong.
- What other sport could so many people be so bad at and yet love so much? I do!
In all fairness, there is a lot to be said for soccer. But the Open is on, and it’s heating up, so I’ll save that for another time.

Cross Centered.
June 16, 2005 6:50 amI finished reading (again) CJ’s The Cross Centered Life this morning.
In the next to last chapter, CJ explains that a cross centered life is made of cross centered days. Here’s how:
- Memorize the gospel.
- Pray the gospel.
- Sing the gospel.
- Review how the gospel has changed you.
- Study the gospel.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about the benefits of singing the gospel. I’ve been doing this by listening to Jars of Clay’s new CD, Redemption Songs.
I’ve especially been enjoying the words to “Nothing But The Blood”:
What can make me whole again?
For my pardon this I see,
For my cleansing this my plea,
Oh, precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing, nothing, nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone
Not of good that I have done
This is all my hope and peace
This is all my righteousness
Oh, precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
And no other fount I know
Nothing, nothing, nothing but the blood of Jesus
Now by this I’ll overcome
Now by this I’ll reach my home
Glory, glory, this I see
All my praise for this I bring
What music has been helping you think about the savior?
