Gospel quotes, part 3
July 1, 2005 8:11 amSome more of my favorite quotes that help me understand what the gospel is all about:
“‘He saved others but he can’t save himself’ (Mark 15:31). Wrong again–and right again. This is the man who voluntarily goes to the cross (Mark 14:36; cf. John 10:18). To say ‘he can’t save himself’ is ridiculously limiting. Yet he couldn’t save himself and save others. He saves others by not saving himself.” D.A. Carson, For the Love of God, entry for 2/12.
“God did not spare his own son, because it was the only way he could spare us.” John Piper, Future Grace, 113.
Quotes to like these are great to read, encouraging, and uplifting, to be sure. But what do we do with them? Dr. Piper goes on to explain a few pages later how to make a gospel connection from these truths to real life. This is one of my favorite quotes ever:
“The great promise of future grace, guaranteed in the logic of Romans 8:32, is that nothing will ever enter your experience as God’s child that, by God’s sovereign grace, will not turn out to be a benefit to you. This is what it means for God to be God, and for God to be for you, and for God to freely give you all things with Christ.” John Piper, Future Grace, 116.
