Christ Died For Our Sins

November 2, 2005 7:16 am

Mike Bullmore explained to us on Sunday that the gospel can be summarized by counting out the five key words of 1 Corinthians 15:3 on one hand: “Christ Died For Our Sins.”

I took Bullmore’s advice and started reading John Ensor’s book, Experiencing God’s Forgiveness. I like the way he explains the significance of these verses:

“That Christ died for our sins affirms the reality of human guilt. That Christ died for our sins affirms the reality of the wrath of a holy God against sinners… like you and me. That it was Christ who died for our sins affirms the love of God for sinners and His sincere desire to bring us from guilt to gladness.” (page 30)

He goes on to explain that “the gladness of heart that takes root and grows from holding firm to the forgiveness of God is like a poor man clinging to a winning lottery ticket.

Let’s be careful, as Mike Bullmore warned us, not to simply adopt the vocabulary of the gospel, but to seek to really understand the truths communicated through the gospel.
