May is a busy birthday month for the Whitacres. We celebrate the birthdays of Nicole, my Dad, and my Pop-Pop, all within a week. So I laughed pretty hard when I read in Time Magazine last week that “two Texas brothers, ages 63 and 65, have been mailing each other the same recycled birthday card for 42 years!”
This is funny to me because my mom recently told me that my great-grandmother would ask people to write the notes in her cards in pencil–so that she could erase the note and reuse the card.
What funny birthday traditions do you have in your family?

me and my friends always give each other toilet paper rolls for our birthdays….
Well, this tradition isn’t exactly funny, but it’s really fun. At someone’s birthday, we’ll all sit around the table at dinner or something and tell funny, serious, or sweet stories about the person whose birthday it is. You can get a lot of tears or a lot of laughs.
we have this thing where, on one of us kids birthdays, all the kids get a small present (and then the birthday person gets a bunch…). It’s become an indespencible part of our family tradition. I think it started with my grandmother doing it to my mom and siblings to keep them from pouting when only one of them was getting all the stuff. I guess mom did the same thing to us to keep us from pouting too. Oh well, we like it…even the big kids.
when I was a kid, at the birthdays at our house, the person who’s birthday it was got to be “king” for the day, and tell all the other brothers what to do
We always let the birthday person pick what we have for dinner, and then pick a dessert. We then sing “Happy Birthday” after dinner. It gets kinda aweful when it’s my mom’s birthday, since she’s the one with the best singing skills, and she can’t sing to herself. So. . . we end up sounding like our cats being strangled.
Birthday traditions….ah yes.
Ususally, we do what Rachel says. We have the dinner and the party, but when the singing comes, it’s usually me and dan…only voices distinguishable from the dishwasher…okay just kidding. Us too…But there is always Peter or Jonny…and now Zachary…here to help us sing…It’s great…We’ve always had someone for the last..oh..three four years here for people’s birthdays…Last one was Micah’s, let’s see…Zach, Jonny…anyway. No kings…no queens…ahummp…Presents!
