Summer Reading Challenge Update
July 7, 2006 10:45 am
If you are doing the Summer Reading Challenge, by now you have probably finished Knowing Scripture, and are beginning The Holiness of God.
Some of my favorite quotations from Knowing Scripture:
“We fail in our duty to study God’s Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy.” (p. 17)
“But what happens when there is a conflict between what God says and what I feel? We must do what God says, like it or not. That is what Christianity is all about… To be sure, knowledge of God’s Word does not guarantee that we will do what it says, but at least we will know what we are supposed to be doing in our quest for human fulfillment. The issue of faith is not so much whether we believe in God, but whether we believe the God we believe in.” (pp. 29-30)
“Ultimately the main reason why we should study the Bible is because it is our duty… A duty is not an option.” (p. 31)
“Private Bible study is an important means of grace for the Christian. It is a privilege and a duty for all of us. In his grace and kindness toward us God has provided not only gifted teachers in his church to assist us, but his own Holy Spirit to illumine his Word and search out its application to our lives. To sound teaching and diligent study, God gives blessing.” (p. 43)
And remember Sproul’s Rules For Biblical Interpretation:
- The Bible Is to Be Read Like Any Other Book
- Read the Bible Existentially
- Historical Narratives Are to Be Interpreted by the Didactic
- The Implicit Is to Be Interpreted by the Explicit
- Determine Carefully the Meaning of Words
- Note the Presence of Parallelisms in the Bible
- Note the Difference between Proverb and Law
- Observe the Difference between the Spirit and the Letter of the Law
- Be Careful with Parables
- Be Careful with Predictive Prophecy
I would love to know: how did you enjoy Knowing Scripture? What did you get out of it? How has it changed the way you read your Bible?

Lunch At Kings Dominion
July 6, 2006 8:20 pm
One other thing: since we’re going to spend the day spread out all over a giant theme park, let’s see if we can’t meet up for lunch. In the center of the park is an area that has a few places to eat called The Grove. Grab some lunch, and be on the look out for our peeps. See you there about noon.

King’s Dominion On Monday
1:40 pm
We go to King’s Dominion this Monday, July 10! We’ll be meeting here at the building at 9am (the park opens at 10:30), but you’ll need to have arranged a ride before you get here. In other words, please don’t show up assuming someone will have an extra spot in their van.
If you haven’t bought tickets yet, no problem. You can just buy them at the gate for $50. Or buy a 3-day advance ticket TODAY online for $34.99. (If you read this post on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you can still save money by buying a $39.99 online discount ticket.
If you bought tickets with us, Mary will be picking them up from the group sales counter Monday morning and passing them out as we head in. If you don’t know what Mary looks like, look for me. If you don’t know what I look like, sing “I’m A Little Teapot” at the top of your lungs and we’ll find you.
Don’t forget to bring: some cash for lunch, modest swimwear and a towel if you plan on hitting the waterpark, and perhaps some sunscreen.
PARENTS: If you are sending your kid without you, please ask another parent to be responsible for your kid at the park. Make sure your teen knows who that is, and that they are reporting to that parent.
Current weather report: partly cloudy, 90º, only 20% chance of percipitation. Perfect.

How To Be Cross-Eyed
11:04 amFor your consideration:
“Your mind can only protect against the deceit of the flesh if you are cross-eyed. That is, you can only keep the rottenness of sin and the kindness of God in mind if you fix your eyes on the cross. What shows God’s hatred of sin more than the cross? What shows God’s love to you more than the cross? If you want to know exactly what sin deserves you have to understand the cross. If you want to know how infinitely deep the rot of sin reaches, you have to think through all the implications of the cross. If you want to know how far God was willing to go to rescue you from sin, you have to see his precious Son hanging on the cross for you.” Lundgaard, The Enemy Within, 66.

five15 BIG MEETING On Saturday
July 5, 2006 3:21 pmWe have a five15 BIG MEETING on Saturday. You know the details: pizza & ping-pong ay 5:15pm, meeting starts at 6:30pm. A couple other features of this meeting you should be aware of:
- Like to skate? We’ve received some inquiries lately about if and when skating (and other wheeled sports like bikes, blades, scooters, etc.) might be allowed. We’d like to explain our posture and policies about skating. Come find out more at 5pm in Room 102. Bring your parents.
- Rising 7th Graders! You should have received an email from me last week inviting you to this meeting, and to a special meeting for you and your parents immediately after the five15 meeting. This is your first official five15 meeting, and we want to welcome you to five15 and tell you more about what you can expect! Plan on coming early for pizza and ping-pong (bring a few dollars for dinner), and stay a little bit later for this meeting.

National Ice Cream Month
10:18 amIt was a slow holiday weekend on the blog; we went away with my family for a brief vacation to Charleston, SC. While there, I made an intriguing discovery: July is National Ice Cream Month. I’m not sure who gets to designate months thus, but I think it’s only fitting that the month containing my birthday be National Ice Cream Month.
Breyer’s Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream can’t be beat. I am firmly of the opinion that mint chocolate chip should be white, not green, and no one does it better than Breyers. Second favorite: Ben & Jerry’s Marsha Marsha Marshamallow. You can laugh if you like. I’m laughing, too. All the way to the freezer.
What about you? How will you celebrate National Ice Cream Month?
