No Dogs Please

May 3, 2007 9:42 pm

Eats1.jpgI have always loved words, I have grown to appreciate grammar, but I never thought much about punctuation until I read Lynne Truss’s brilliant Eats, Shoots and Leaves.

I’ve been laughing all day at this excerpt from the book, which appeared this morning on my Eats, Shoots and Leaves Daily Calendar:

“When signs go up saying “No dogs please”, only one person in a thousand bothers to point out that actually, as a statement, “no dogs please” is an indefensible generalisation, since many dogs do please, as a matter of fact; they rather make a point of it.”

If you don’t get it, read the book!
