Bob Kauflin goes on to explain:

Music exists to deepen our love for and enjoyment of God.

  1. Music is a gift from God, meant for our enjoyment and benefit.
  2. Music is a gift from God, not a means to an end.
  3. Discernment and skill increase the benefit of music.

I don’t understand this quote. I think I might be missing the context.

The preamble to his three points recite that music exists for a purpose. The purpose is to deepen our love for and enjoyment of God.

His point #2 seems completely contradictory. If the purpose of the existence of music is to deepen our love for and enjoyment of God, wouldn’t it by definition be a means to an end?

means: pitch, rhythm, structure, lyrics, etc (music)
end: a deepened love for and enjoyment of God.

You raise some great questions. It’s funny – I’ve thought I understood what he meant by these before, but now I’m not so sure. I look forward to his book coming out – maybe that will clear this up for us. I think what he’s saying is that music isn’t a means to our personal fulfillment – whether pleasure, the approval of others, status as a musician, etc. I’ll have to see if I can find out more…
