In The New Year, Don’t Forget…

MEDITATION

On Sunday, Mark encouraged us to spend this year with two important practices:

  1. reading from a new Bible reading plan, and
  2. making a point of meditating on what we read.

It’s worth more than a pancake breakfast.  Thomas Watson explains:

“The reason we come away so cold from reading the word is because we do not warm ourselves at the fire of meditation.”

Check back tomorrow for some ideas on what to do when you meditate.

How about you: Are you using the Bible reading plan?  How is it going so far?  What have you learned in your meditation?

So far I’ve really enjoyed doing this reading plan. In Matthew and in Ezra God has been showing me many things that I had never seen before in reading these books.

In particular, I’ve been amazed at God’s sovereignty in Ezra as He worked through various Persian kings to bless the returning Exiles and give them success in rebuilding the temple.

I was so excited when I sat down that Sunday morning and saw that the topic was on Bible reading and meditation. I had already made it my personal New Year’s resolution to try and be more consistent in my quiet times and to meditate on the Word. The reading plan has been extremely helpful and I am excited that now many of my friends and I will be reading the same thing everyday. I look forward to being able to discuss what I’ve been reading with them.

i’m finding my quiet times have exploded recently. i’ve begun developing the habit of praying for illumation before i begin reading. God loves to bless that prayer.
one cool story: i was reading and came across a passage that i didn’t understand. that is, i understood what it meant on the surface, but i knew there was deeper meaning that wasn’t penetrating my brain. I spent a while re-reading and praying over that passage. finally, after a bit, God spoke to me and revealed what He wanted to communicate to me through that passage. it was a truly sweet time of hearing the Lord’s voice through His Word.
