What’s On Your Bedside Table?
June 7, 2008 3:18 pmI’m always curious about what other people are reading. What’s on your bedside table? Or if there isn’t much you’re reading right now, what are your plans for summer reading?
The following books aren’t all literary on my bedside table, but here’s what I’m reading. I’m the kind of person who reads several different books at the same time. Each has a different purpose, and is for a different time and place.
DEVOTIONAL:
- The Bible, by God. Reading Isaiah. Just finished John. About to go back to Psalms. I prefer the ESV, and I’m using The Literary Study Bible this year. Love it.
- A Gospel Primer by Milton Vincent. I need to be reminded of the gospel everyday!
- Praying the Lord’s Prayer by J.I. Packer. Because I want to pray better.
- The Death of Christ by James Denney. An old, classic explanation of substitutionary atonement.
TO GROW:
- Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris. For the Book Club! Fun stuff.
- Christian Mission in the Modern World by John Stott. A topic I want to understand better.
- The Reason for God by Tim Keller. Heard a lot about it, want to see for myself.
- The Institutes of the Christian Religion, Volume 1, by John Calvin. A (perhaps overly-) ambitious summer reading project with my friend Jed. We’re going to try to read the entire unabridged Ford Lewis Battles translation this summer. Yahoo. Anyone want to join us? 1550 pages in 90 days-how hard can it be?
FOR FUN:
- Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe. I like reading classic literature, and this is a keeper. I was inspired to read this after talking about the real-life Robinson Crusoe, Alexander Selkirk.
- The Perfect Mile, by Neal Bascomb. My sister loaned me this book since we are both runners and I was a miler in high school. Of course, I never came anywhere near a four-minute mile, so this book is fascinating to me.
How about you? Tell us about it!

For fun:
I’m just finishing the Famous Five series… so that won’t last me long into summer.
After that there’s a long list of books people have recommended to me. I’ll probably start reading some of those.
I’d love to read “The Underland Chronicles” again, but I think I’ll run out of time before the end of summer since I want to get through all the recommended books first.
I’m also reading the story I just finished writing because I have to go through and edit it.
I love reading!!
I read my Bible and I have a bookshelf of fun books. I read mysteries like Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. I LOVE TO READ GOOD BOOKS!!
:)
I read the bible mostly. For fun I’m reading Warriors, Harry Potter, The Inheritance trilogy (again), and the Chronicles of Narnia
we don’t have a bedside table. but we are still reading.
DEVOTIONAL:
Bible
One Minute Bible For Students
FOR FUN:
Magazines
the third book in the Molly Moon series
magazines is not the name of a book, it just means magazines.
I really liked Robinson Crusoe and I would recomend it to any one. It starts slow but if you can get past that it’s a great book!!! . . . READ IT!!

“One Minute Bible For Students”

Then Sings My Soul (Robert Morgan)
The Case for Christianity (C.S. Lewis)
Know Why You Believe (Paul E. Little)
For Fun:
Nothing much. I’m trying to finish reading the shorter ones I already have though. I will probably dive into some really long fiction book.
Usually my desk is like drowning in books, but lately I’m pretty much done with most of them. The ones left:
Devotional…Testimonies, five15 addresses and pastors’ quotes, and BIBLE
To Grow…same as above
Fun…The Guardian, from the O’Malley series, and the negotiator (same series)
Planning to read…Scarlet Letter

The books literally on my beside table (actually, its a dresser) are:
The Bible
Valley of Vision
Do Hard Things
Knowledge of the Holy
Girl Talk
Systematic Theology
Due to the fact that you can only stack books so high, especially if two of the books are thick, other books not in the stack that I am reading are:
Spurgeon: Heir of the Puritans
Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens (my plan is to get through all the Charles Dickens books, as he is a brilliant writer whose descriptions are amazing in mine and my sister’s opinion)
The Bible, Valley of Vision,
For Fun: Do Hard Things
The Cross of Christ
Overcoming Sin and Temptation
Pierced for our Transgressions
All good books,
