Herméneutica

April 12, 2006 11:29 am

Dean tells us that Rule #11 of missions trips is "BE FLEXIBLE."  Dave Echegoyen had to be flexible on Monday when he learned that he would be translating for Mark as Mark teaches hermeneutics to Dean's staff and the teachers for the school.  Dean's evalutaion is that after Carlos and Abelardo from the Juarez church, Dave is the best translator he has heard at the ranch.

Tuesday Devotions

11:51 am

Mx Gabe Devotions 2.jpg

Gabe Lewis led us in devotions this morning from Philippians 3:7-9:

"But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith…"

Gabe reminded us that there are many things that we might desire more than Christ, including our own personal ease (like not reaching out to others), a good night’s sleep, or a long, hot shower.  We spent time thanking God for the gift of salvation in Christ Jesus, and then we prayed for the families we left at home in Virginia and Maryland who are serving in so many ways to make this trip possible!  I hope you feel God’s presence and pleasure today!

Playing With Kids

11:46 am

In the afternoons, some of our people are watching all the kids of the Ranch so that Dean, his staff, and the teachers of the school can be taught hermeneutics by Mark Mullery.  This is serious serving: the language barrier with these young children is pretty big, but our team is doing a great job serving them.

Tiling

11:39 am

Some of our guys are busy laying down tile in two rooms of the school.  This is tough work: they're all getting bruised knees and sore backs.  But what a service the finished product will be for the kids!

La Tienda

11:29 am

One of the projects we began yesterday was la tienda - basically a 10' x 10' shed attached to the ranch school building from which the kids will be able to buy candy, snacks and sporting goods.  We are building this thing entirely from scratch on top of an existing concrete pad.  Debbie Vahle's carpentry skills are proving invaluable!

Monday Devotions

April 10, 2006 12:15 pm

Colin Mullery led us in devotions this morning by explaining to us the ‘peace with God’ revealed to us in Romans 5:1-2.  He explained that peace with God is not just a cease-fire or an uneasy truce, but relationship, nearness, even friendship.  If we are Christians, this is what our relationship with God is like.  Colin very helpfully pointed out that this is every bit as true in Mexico as it is in Fairfax, so we can expect God’s nearness here today.

Some prayer requests submitted this morning, which we prayed for together, but we would also ask for your prayers:

  • Ben Hinders asked for prayer for his toe: he injured it playing soccer.
  • Logan Lamons may have hurt his back playing soccer.
  • Katherine Sawyer asked for prayer for a her headaches and general soreness.
  • Jacque Weaver asked us to pray for throbbing pain in a cut on her finger.

Barrigas

12:13 pm

Barrigas is a favorite Mexican restaurant here; the name means something like "Big Belly."  Which is what we got last night after stuffing ourselves with arrechera - a delicious marinated beef dish.

We are also proud to announce that we set the new record for longest straw ever used to drink Coke in a Barrigas restaurant:

Remember The Alamo

12:06 pm

Yesterday our sister church in Juarez, Gracia Soberana, hosted the annual USA v. Mexico soccer game.  The last time the USA won this match, most of the teens on our trip were toddlers.  So it is with great pleasure that I announce an American victory, even while the first goal was scored for the Mexicans by our own Ken Jones, playing for a short-handed Mexican squad.  Final Score:

Sovereign Grace 3*
Gracia Soberana 2

*Unfortunately, this score will be logged in the record books with an asterisk for a number of reasons and may be called into question for generations to come.  Reasons cited include a short-handed Mexican squad, questionable game scheduling techniques (during a drama rehearsal, when many Mexican players weren't available) and a "we play until we win" pronouncement by El Jefe Pelon that virtually guaranteed American victory due to their many available subs.  We still consider it a moral victory.
